Sarah’s Two Nativities by Janine M. Fraser & Helene Magisson (Black Dog Books)

There are two religions in Sarah’s family – the Bible and Koran sit side by side on a shelf. At Christmas time Sarah enjoys both her grandmother’s company and she helps them cook special treats and listens to stories. Sarah’s favourite is the nativity – the story of the birth of Jesus.

Both narrate the same story but are different. Sarah loves both stories just as much as she loves both grandmothers, but she wonders ‘how can both be true?’

I love how the author deals with this question. Sarah’s grandmothers keep her believing in the awe of the mystery of the unknown while grounding her in the gratitude of the love of family and peace of togetherness.

Helene Magisson’s artwork speaks to the soul. The colours are vibrant and yet soft at the same time. The texture on these glossy pages looks as if it may have the feel of a delicate peach! The illustrations and text are a pleasure to behold and offer a delightful reading experience with your child.

~ Acceptance ~ Love ~ Wonder ~ Gratitude ~ Family ~ Together ~ Peace ~

This is a wonderful book to read at Christmas time. A time when families come together and appreciate the blessing that binds them together. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what stories we believe in, so long as the stories carry wonder, hope and love. 🗨 Do you think so too? 🗨

Suggested age: Read aloud to 3+. Read by self 5+. Recommended for a confident reader.
